What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is the process of facilitating a person in the development of his or her relationship with God. In spiritual direction you will have the opportunity to pay attention to God’s Presence in your prayer and in your daily life. The director listens and asks questions to assist you in your process of reflection and spiritual growth. Spiritual direction develops a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human.

"Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul."

Thomas Merton

"Spiritual direction is the contemplative practice of helping another person or group to awaken to the mystery called God in all of life, and to respond to that discovery in a growing relationship of freedom and commitment."

James Keegan, SJ

"The director’s role is to help connect individuals to the Story, and thereby help the directee to discern the action of the Spirit… the spiritual director is both a learner and a teacher of discernment."

Margaret Guenther
