Preparing Spiritual Leaders to Companion the Fifth Step with Wisdom, Compassion, and Integrity

NOTE: This program is not designed for people going through 12 Step programs; rather, for pastoral professionals leading them.

The fifth step of 12 step programs is crucial but difficult: confession. As clergy, pastors, and religious and spiritual directors work with those in recovery, the way they handle this step is crucial. It requires individuals to share the truth of their past actions and behaviors, not only with themselves, but also with others and a higher power. This process can be difficult, but it is a key part of moving forward with accountability, healing, and self-awareness. Learn how to wisely facilitate this step with care under the tutelage of two very experienced leaders.

ARCHBISHOP EMERITUS SYLVAIN LAVOIE OMI - Sylvain is a former bishop of the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas, was an Oblate missionary among the Indigenous peoples for decades, speaks some Cree and has done extensive work in the area of addictions awareness. He is author of five books, has chaired committees for the Oblates and the Western Bishops, and serves as a board member at the Star.

JUSTIN ROBERT has been an active member of the Recovery community for over 10 years. He had a spiritual awakening as a result of going through the program of an anonymous fellowship. After this awakening, he worked as an in-take worker for a detox/homeless shelter and was executive director and founder of a non-profit organization. Justin participated in many interventions and 12 step calls, as well as facilitated over 50 Big Book studies. He has sponsored over 30 people in the anonymous fellowships and was a keynote speaker for one of the fellowship’s conventions in the summer of 2023. Justin is grateful to be a recovered addict and for the ability to be of service in any capacity in the recovery community.
