Breaking New Ground Together: Treaty Rights and the Indian Act

Hearing from both an Indigenous and church perspective, we will explore the history and meaning of the Treaties, the implications of the Indian Act, and explore the possibilities of new foundations for relationship with country, land and peoples.  Our day will include presentations, lunch, dialogue and sharing. Harry Lafond comes from and lives on the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 6 Territory. He has a Master’s degree in education with certification to teach the Cree language. Harry was asked to be the chief of Muskeg Lake and served the people in this role for 10 years. For 11 years he served as the Executive Director of the Office of the Treaty Commissioner in Saskatchewan. Harry believes in the power of building relationships as the primary road to a better community and the building block to the strengthening of a people.
