Star of the North Retreat Centre (STAR)

The Board of Directors invites applications for the position of Executive Director of STAR, to commence March 26, 2012.

 

STAR, a ministry of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI Lacombe Canada), provides challenge and support for prophetic ministry, awakening people to their personal dignity, beauty, strengths, and gifts.

 

The Executive Director will be a servant leader, working collaboratively with the Oblate Leadership Team, the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and the local church.

 

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor and/or Masters Degree in theological, religious, and/or spiritual studies, or equivalent education, knowledge, and experience.

 

In summary, the successful candidate will demonstrate exemplary knowledge, skills, and attributes in the following areas:

  • Stewardship of the Mission, Vision, and Values of STAR;
  • Coordination and evaluation of STAR programs, both sponsored and hosted;
  • Public relations and advertising;
  • Fundraising;
  • Right relationships with the diverse people of God;
  • Administration of STAR personnel; and
  • Management of the daily operations, finances, and capital needs of STAR.

Terms of Employment

 

The Executive Director will work a typical 35 hour week, with flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.  Salary and benefits will be commensurate with OMI guidelines.

Edna DeChamplain is a part-time administrative assistant and special events planner. She has been at The Star since June of 2001 and in November 2010 moved from a full-time to a part-time position. She is happy to continue to be connected to The Star.

Edna most enjoys working with “The Star Team”. She also enjoys meeting and getting to know the guests and other people who come through the facility. When asked to relate her experience while working at The Star, Edna shared that “I love the welcoming, peaceful feeling you get when you walk in.”  In her spare time Edna likes to read, sleep, dance, walk and eat chocolate!


Donna Ebert has been working in housekeeping at the Star since September 2007. Donna’s main duties are cleaning, making beds, and making thinks sparkle here at the Star. Donna most enjoys the atmosphere of the Star and all the people that she works with. When asked to relate a noteworthy experience while working at the Star Donna described how rewarding it was to go as a staff at Christmas time to do volunteer work at the Bissell Centre. In her spare time Donna loves to walk with her hus-band. Donna looks forward to summer because she loves gardening and sitting on her swing with a good book!

Jeanne Wolfe has been cooking here at the Star for over two years.

In March she was promoted to the head chef position. Jeanne was raised in Northern Alberta. She is the proud mother of  three children, and enjoys spending her ‘spare’ time with her family.

Our guests have been enjoying Jeanne’s excellent meals, and we welcome her into this position.

 
 

Karen Klarke has been working part-time in Food Service at The Star since September 2007.  Karen most enjoys meeting the Star’s visitors and preparing meals. She appreciates the special atmosphere at the Star. 

In her spare time Karen enjoys family gatherings and fun events with her friends, family and especially her grandson. Karen’s hobbies are gardening, camping, swimming, biking riding, catering parties, all of which bring her peace.


Linda MacIsaac is our Program Coordinator. She has been at the Star since November 2000. Her duties include organizing the programming at the Star, marketing and advertising the programs, and preparing our Newsletter – the Star Gazer. Linda enjoys the welcoming, peaceful atmosphere at the Star and the people she works with . She has been touched by hearing stories from our guests of God working in their hearts and lives while they are here at our facility. Linda enjoys spending time with her family, reading, yoga and traveling.

Sandy Prather is the Executive Director of our facility. Her responsibilities include setting a spiritual vision and direction for the centre, overseeing its smooth functioning and working collaboratively with the Board and staff to ensure the mission of the Star is carried out. Sandy has been with the Star of the North Retreat Centre since August of 1991. Sandy describes the Star as a special place that people love to come visit.   She describes the staff as dedicated and excellent to work with. 

Sandy’s interests include theology, travel, and yoga.


Gary Simpson is our housekeeper, maintenance person and decorator at the Star. His main duties include maintaining the facility in good repair, seeing that the facility is clean and tidy for the use of our guests, and redecorating and refurbishing the building within a set budget. Gary began working at the Star in 1991 with a contract to redecorate the willow room. After that he moved on to a major renovation with the dining room, front entrance, library and other areas of the building. Gary enjoys the variety of work but most of all working with a very cohesive, friendly, cooperative group of people (staff) and a broad spectrum of people (guests). In his spare time Gary enjoys such hobbies as decorat-ing, his pets (Chewy – a 2 year old short haired chow-chow and Guber – a 25 year old Moroccan cockatoo), gardening and landscaping, cooking (especially desserts), and dining out.

Izabela Szynkowski is our Receptionist/Bookkeeper. She has been working at the Star since September of 2002. Izabela’s duties include greeting guests, bookkeeping and office management.  Izabela also maintains the Star’s website. She enjoys the variety of tasks that she performs: running errands, doing desk and computer work, and meeting a variety of people. Izabela enjoys working with her fellow staff members whom she finds are kind, friendly and a joy to work with. She also enjoys interacting with the guests and visitors that come to the facility, especially those who have been moved by their stay here or whom she has been able to help in some small way. In her spare time Izabela enjoys music (playing the piano and singing), crafts (candle making, crocheting and knitting) as well as gardening.
